The municipality

The municipality of L'Avenir (1,307 inhabitants in 2016; 9,910 ha) is located 20 km south-east of Drummondville.
L'Avenir (French, The Future) was named by Jean-Baptiste Dorion (1826-1866) for the newspaper of the same name. Dorion defended liberalism with such a fervor that he was nicknamed "the terrible child" by his opponents. He was among the founders of Institut canadien, established in Montreal on 17 December 1844. Together with George Batchelor, he founded the newspaper "L'Avenir", whose first printed issue was released on 16 July 1847. In his newspaper, Dorion pushed separation of the church and the state, non-confessional education and annexation of Canada to the US. His ideas became so radical that he quit publishing "L'Avenir" in 1852, retiring near Drummondville.
