Trois-Rivières

The municipality of Trois-Rivières (130;413 inhabitants in 2016; 28,896 ha) is located on the northern bank of river Saint-Laurent, half way of Quebec and Montreal. The municipality was established on 4 July 2001 as the merger of the former municipalities of Trois-Rivières, Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Trois-Rivières-Ouest, Pointe-du-Lac, Saint-Louis-de-France, and Sainte-Marthe-du-Cap.

Trois-Rivières, once inhabited by the Algonquins, was first described in 1535 by the explorer Jacques Cartier. Captain Dupont-Gravé named the place Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers) in 1599; in 1603, the geographer Samuel de Champlain found the place suitable for the establishment of a permanent settlement, which was initiated on 4 July 1634 by Laviolette.
Originally established as a trade post, Trois-Rivières was made the seat of a regional governorate in 1665, of a judicial district (1792), and of a bishopric (1852). The Forges de Saint-Maurice, established in 1738 as the first heavy industry in Canada, transformed Trois-Rivières into an industrial town. A century later, the exploitation of the forest resources of the valley of Saint-Maurice resulted in the erection of sawmills and paper mills in the town.

Current flag

Design

The flag of the City of Trois-Rivières has a white field with the city logo in the centre, about two-thirds the height of the flag. The logo is square but for a wavy base; its background is green. A figure in blue (a stylized representation of the Saint-Maurice River Delta) runs from the upper to lower edge. It consists of an upright line toward the left, which divides near its top and its centre into two parallel diagonal lines running toward the lower right and all three lines meeting a wavy line across the base. Below, running the length of the logo, is trois-rivières in light blue sans-serif letters.

Symbolism

The logo was adopted in 1984. Translated from city documentation:

The graphical symbol represents the geographical factor that is at the origin of the name of Trois-Rivières. The three branches of the Saint-Maurice river delta indeed give the impression to be "three rivers" (in French: trois rivières) feeding the Saint-Lawrence see way. The horizontal line at the base of the symbol represents by its wavy shape the Saint Lawrence river. The two shapes surrounded by blue constitute a representation of the two main islands that can be seen from the Saint Lawrence. Blue symbolizes water, while green stands for nearby vegetation, rich in forests. Inspired by the name of the city, this graphical symbol allows us to understand and visualize daily our history, and in this sense, is ageless. The overall design is contained in a square, which facilitates its reproduction and adaptation.

The two islands are Saint-Quentin (on the left), and L'île de la Potherie (on the right). The designer of the logo was Pierre Rivard, graphic artist.
