Saint-René-de-Matane has 1,000 inhabitants, 255.70 km²
The municipality's namesake and parish's patron saint is St. René Goupil
(1608-1642, canonized on 29 June 1930 by Pope Pius XI), the first of the eight
North American Martyrs of the Roman Catholic Church to receive the crown of
martyrdom and the first canonized Catholic martyr in North America.

The shield is surrounded by maple leaves and fleurs-de-lis that symbolize the
municipality's belonging to Canada and Quebec, respectively. Above the shield is
featured the writing "ST-RENÉ-DE-MATANE".
In the shield's upper part, the
cross on the hill symbolizes the Christian legacy of the municipality, which was
canonically erected in 1968.
In the central left part, a boat emphasizes the
significance of the river.
The central right part illustrates the
exploitation, with axe, of the important forest resource.
The lower left part
features a sun going down behind mountains and the river.
The lower right
part features a wheat garb, as a symbol of the connection with the land and of
the municipality's rural vocation.
Beneath the shield, the French motto
"Agriculture, Nature, Sylviculture".
