Introduction: Calgary Stampeders Football Franchise 1
[Calgary Rugby Foot-ball Club 1906-1907, Calgary Tigers 1908-14 (then sporadically between 1919-1930), 50th Battalion 1923-24 2, Calgary Altomah-Tigers 1931, Calgary Altomah-Indians 1932-34, Calgary Bronks 1935-40, and Calgary Stampeders 1945-present]

The Calgary Stampeders, popularly known as the "Stamps" or "Horsemen," are a professional Canadian football team that compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Stampeders were officially founded in 1945, although there were clubs operating in Calgary, Alberta, since the 1890s.3 Like all the teams playing in the old Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) and Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU), they joined the newly formed Canadian Football League in 1958. They are now the third-oldest active franchise in the CFL.
In their first game played before 4,000 enthusiast home fans at Mewata Stadium on October 20, 1945, the Stamps beat the Regina Roughriders 12-0. In the following years they would go on to appear in the Grey Cup Championships 17 times, winning eight of the coveted Grey Cups and 20 Western Division Championships and one Northern Division Championship.
The Stamps have over the years developed a provincial rivalry with the Edmonton Elks, as well as fierce divisional rivalries with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (not to be confused with the now defunct Regina Roughriders) and the BC Lions.
The Horsemen played all their home games at Mewata Park Stadium (1945-1959), then moved their home field to McMahon Stadium in 1960. Their team colours are red, white and black and their beloved mascot is "Ralph the Dog."

Note: Be aware that there are a host of manufacturer's variants of fan flags being marketed for Stamps fans. This would also include garden flags, banners, and pennants.

Footnotes:

  • Note #1: It is important to caution you that there are two other sports programs in Calgary whose flags and banners are often confused with those of the modern football team. They are the "Stampeders" (a defunct hockey team) and the "Calgary Stampede." (a yearly rodeo event)
  • Note #2: Named after the 50th Battalion, an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I.
  • Note #3: Prior to the formation of the Stampeders in 1945, football in Calgary can be dated back as early as 1891, when Edmonton defeated Calgary 6-5 in the Alberta Total-point Challenge Series. After that multiple Calgary rugby-football teams (as noted above) would come and go, none of these earlier Calgary based teams are part of today's Stampeders official history or records.

These Calgary Stampeders wordmark logos are also sometimes used as alternate logos (usually in conjunction with Mascot Logos) on flags, publications and websites. They are helpful for flag scholars in dating or typing flags (throwback, etc.)

Knowledge of sport franchise logos is one tool that vexillologist can use to help date flags and pennants. The material, cloth and weave can also help.

Calgary Stampeders Commemorative Flags

These C flags celebrate the eight Grey Cup Championships of the Calgary Stampeders (1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014, 2018) and 17 (now 20) Division Championships (1946, 1948, 1949, 1965, 1967, 1971, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018).
These are the equivalent of eight American NFL Superbowl victories and 20 divisional titles.

Calgary Stampeders Throwback Flags

Based on this photo and this photo.

A throwback or retro flag uses older Calgary Stampeders logos in its design. Naturally they can also be actual antique flags, rather than ones of modern manufacture. These examples of retro type flags use the 1976-2012 logo and the 2000-2014 wordmark logo.

Stampeders Fan Flags

Fan Flags are commercially manufactured flags either officially approved or licensed by a team or, unfortunately, in some cases, they might be illegal "ripoffs." There are also non-commercial one-of-a-kind handmade fan variants in use. They come in many styles, both vertical and horizon, and many variants exist. Designs are available with various horizontal and vertical strip patterns and design elements, but these flags all use some common design elements: usually a team logo, or a team helmet, and generally use the team colours of red, black, and white.

Fan flags are available for the Stampeders both in vertical and horizontal formats. These Helmet-style flags done in the team colors with different field designs and are made for most CFL teams and have become very popular in recent years.

Use of the older Calgary Stampeders logo on the helmet makes this questionable second flag almost makes it a retro flags.

Calgary Stampeders Logo Motif Flags

The use of a single Calgary Stampeders logo is a fairly common motif of Horsemen fan flags, but why not a herd of three?.

Lions Man Cave Flags

These Stamps fan flags are less for displaying at games or on flag poles, but more for the walls of the home "man cave."   These "Sundays are for Stampeders" and "Welcome to Stampeders Country" type flags are being made for other CFL teams, naturally used with varying team names, days, and colours.
