The Flag

Usiacurí is a municipality in Department of Atlantico, Colombia. It was founded on 17 September 1534.
The flag of Usiacurí is at the municipal web site.
Dov Gutterman and Felipe Carillo, 2 August 2008

According to municipal web site:, the flag was adopted on by [Municipal?] Decree No. 009 on 10 June 1997, as the result of a public contest won by the Coeducational School No. 1 "Vicente Carlos Urueta".
The green outer border of the flag represents the local natural environment and vegetation.
The blue, inner rectangle honours Our Lady of the Assumption and symbolizes peace and tranquillity of the inhabitants of Usiacurí.
The beige border and rhomb represents the regionally, nationally and internationally famous weavers of the village, which use the young leaves of the Iraca palm (Carludovica palmata Ruiz & Pav., aka the Panama hat palm) to make handbags, purses, hats, etc.
The spider web on the rhomb recalls a poem by Julio Flórez (1867-1923), the most popular Colombian poet of his times. Back to Colombia in 1909, Flórez retired in Usiacurí to heal his gastric pains with the local hot waters. He married (officially not before 1922, under the pressure of the Church) a 14 years-old villager and they got five children. The poet was awarded short before his death the title of "National Poet" but he was too sick to travel to Bogotá or Baranquilla, so that the ceremony took place at Usiacurí on 14 January 1923, in the presence of the Governor and a huge crowd - and 163 cars. Flórez passed away on 7 February; his house is today a museum. The poem "La araña" (The Spider) is part of the book "Fronda  Lírica".
A photography of the celebration of the 198th anniversary of the independence of Colombia shows, partially, the flag of Usiacurí. YouTube shows a video footge featuring the Mayoress of Usiacurí proudly presenting her village and the Iraca craftswomen.
The poem "The Spider" can be read at <orbita.starmedia.com> ("It's all about ANTS").
