Overview

Barrancominas (often called "Barranco Minas") is a young municipality in Colombia. It was established when Ordinance 248 of the Departamental Assembly of Guainía took effect, on December 1, 2019. Through consultation, the C.D. Mapiripana was also included in the boundaries of the municipality. Being in the Colombian Amazon, it is no surprise much of the population is indigenous. Separately, C.D. San Felipe was also asked about the process of municipalization, to which they responded no. The municipality can only be accessed through the River Guaviare or the airport, so driving or walking here is not reasonably possible.

With a bit of research, it appears a presidential decree from May 12, 1965 approved the formation of the town of Barrancominas. On April 19, 1970, the community was established. However, it was not until May 31, 1971 that the town was laid out by Julio Flores; this is the same year pioneers truly started to arrive. It appears these pioneers came here due to the violence in the country at the time. Barrancominas became a corregimiento in January 1973 it appears. Sadly, Barrancominas became a FARC headquarters because of its conditions and was not liberated until Operation "Gato Negro" happened.

Flag

From June 7 to July 15, people above the age of 14 were allowed to submit works for the symbols of Barrancominas. A million Colombian pesos were awarded to the designers of the flag and coat of arms; 1.5 million for the anthem. Half a month later, after a day reviewing the 34 proposals submitted, ten jurors voted on the symbols of Barrancominas. These symbols were chosen on August 3, 2022. Prizes awarded on August 7.

There were sixteen proposals for the flag. The Educational Institution of Carpintero's submission was named as the winner, with seven votes out of ten. The sun represents the strength of the municipality's population, while the tree of life represents ethno-cultural wealth; this unites the worldviews of the indigenous groups in the area.

Coat of Arms

from the Municipal Government's website

There were 15 proposals for the coat of arms. In the end, the proposal by Jaime Ocampo Gutiérrez was approved, with 9 out of 10 votes.

Blue and green are the most significant colors of the municipality. On the coat of arms, the motto "Abnegation and Peace" is used. As for the top portion, the door is the entrance to the municipality. Centered is a stream. The white background on this portion is for peace. In the middle, green is for the area's diversity of flora and fauna. In the center is a map of the municipal boundaries between two trees. On the left tree is a scarlet macaw, native to the region. Yellow is for the different riches of the region. The lower portion references the water resources of the municipality. Fish represents economic and nutritional sustenance. The bow and arrow are of power and protection, mainly used by the indigenous peoples in the jungle. Below this portion is a canoe and two paddles, tools which the first settlers used to get here. On the canoe is the municipal name.
