Overview

The municipality of Bagaces (19,536 inhabitants in 2011; 12,735 ha), located 20 km south of Liberia, forms Canton No. 4 of the Guanacaste Province. The canon is made of four districts: Bagaces (12,367 inh.; 8,867 ha), La Fortuna (2,756 inh.; 1,593 ha), Mogote (3,398 inh.; 1,845 ha), and Río Naranjo (1,015 inh.; 429 ha).

Bagaces was originally established in 1687 at the confluence of rivers Tenorio and Curubicí (today, Corobicí), a place located today in the canton of Cañas. A chapel was built to prepare the colonization of the Bagaces valley, to no avail. A second attempt of settlement was performed in 1739, north-west of the original site, in the area subsequently known as Villa Vieja (Old village). The third, successful settlement was established in 1790 by Father Nicolás Carrillo; the newly founded parish was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Concepción de Bagaces was granted the title of "villa" by State Law No. 20 of 11 November 1824. Law No. 63 of 4 November 1825 allocated the village to the district of Cañas, part of the West Department (Costa Rica was then divided into two departments). Bagaces was transferred to the Guanacaste Department by Law No. 105 of 27 March 1835. Together with Cañas, Bagaces formed Canton No. 4 of Guanacaste Province, established by Law No. 36 of 7 December 1848. Law No. 22 of 29 September 1858 prescribed the relocation of the towns of Bagaces and Cañas to a site named Bebedero, located at the confluence of rivers Las Piedras (today, Blanco) and Tenorio. A Decree adopted by the Executive in 1882 cancelled this prescription. Bagaces was granted the title of "ciudad" by Law No. 44 of 30 July 1918.
