Hammer and mallet are symbolising mining, the flask iis representing chemical industries. Both are the base of economic development in the region. Both charges are also representing Wolfen and are taken from its former arms. The radiant sun is symbolising solar industries - an energy form of the future; furthermore heat, life, growth and modern technology. It appeared also on the arms of the incorporated municipality of Thalheim. Before the increase of mining the region had a rural character. The wheat ears are stressing this character and are also representing the five former entities forming the nowadays city: Bitterfeld, Wolfen, Greppin, Holzweißig and Thalheim. The water-lily leaves are the family arms of the Counts of Brehna. They also appear in the arms of the former municipalities of Bitterfeld and Greppin.
The arms were drafted by heraldrist Lutz Döring
