Grand Duchy of Berg 1806-1808

Granted to General Murat. Used flag white over dark red (amaranth if I remember correctly) between 15 March 1806 to July 1808, when the French tricolor was adopted. In 1808 the crown passed to Napoleon Louis (son of Louis Bonaparte) and Murat was granted the kingdom of Naples. Napoleon Louis was under the regency of the Emperor Napoleon. Information provided by Lucien Philippe.

Grand Duchy of Berg 1808-1810

[Grand Duchy of Berg 1808-1810 (Germany)]
by Željko Heimer

In 1810 the Great Duchy was annexed to France, taking effect on 1 January 1811. Information provided by Lucien Philippe.

Jaume Ollé, 1998

After the Napoleonic era, Berg became part of Prussia within the Provinz Kleve-Berg which was merged 1824 with Provinz Niederrhein (Lower Rhine Province) to make up the Provinz Rheinland or Rheinprovinz.

Santiago Dotor, 27 February 2001

The comment, "the Grand Duchy was annexed to France in 1810" is only partially correct — the territories of the Grand Duchy located to the north of the Lippe River were ceded to France. The Duchy continued to exist until 1813, and, as a general government under the rule of a Russian statesman, J. Gruner, until 1815, minus the formerly Prussian territories which reverted to Prussian rule in 1813. The remainder also fell to Prussia in 1815.

Amaranth over white swallow tailed (c. 1:2). This information is from The Flag Bulletin and the colors are reversed to those in the information from Lucien Philippe.
