Naumburg Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a key Gules in bend over a sword Gules in bend sinister pointing to base.
Meaning:
The arms are based on those of the Bishopric of Naumburg, displaying on a shield Gules a sword Argent in bend sinister pointing to chief over a key Argent in bend. In the 13th century Naumburg city gained independence from the Bishopric. The council then decided to adopt the arms of the bishopric but in counterchanged tinctures and with the sword pointing downwards. Until 1994 the sword was still superimposing the key. This was changed in 1994. Otto Hupp (1925), and Joseph Decku displayed completely different arms, based on seals from the 14th century as follows: "A sinister facing duke, armed Azure, crowned by a ducal coronet Or and Gules, with sword Or and banner Gules on pole Or, leaning on an inescutcheon, displaying the arms of the bishopric.". According to source the Duke is St. Wenceslaus I of Bohemia. Sword and key are usually the attributes of St. Paul and St. Peter, the patron saints of Naumburg Cathedral and probably also of the bishopric.
