Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a golden (= yellow) castle. The castle has two towers each one topped by a triangular roof. Between the tops of the towers is a heart of the same colour. Below the heart is a silver( =white) bird's head holding a golden annulet in his beak.
Meaning:
According to source the arms are based upon the oldest known seal of the city from 1366. The city wall and towers obviously show the city itself. The meaning of the bird holding an annulet and the heart are unknown. The city had used the arms since the 14th century, but the arms were only officially registered in 1858. The colour of the arms however still varied from gold on blue to red on silver (in times of the DDR).

The flag and the redesigned coat of arms were adopted on 1 August 1994. The coat of arms was first officially granted on 10April 1858 and approved again in 1994. On 2 January 1941 the city received new arms; in a red and green divided shield a golden boar. These arms were abandoned in 1945. Until 1994 the city used the arms again only red in silver. In 1994 the present coulours were restored.

Flag and coat of arms were approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 17 August 1995, published in the roll of arms of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania as no. 0076.
