Introduction of Landschaft-Sylt Subcounty

After the city of Westerland had merged with the muncipalities of rantum and Sylt-Ost on 1 January 2009, there remained four municipalities in the subcounty (Amt) together having just about 4500 inhabitants. As a subcounty should have at least 8000 inhabitants, the subcounty was enforced to join an administrative cooperation (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft / VG) with the municipality of Sylt.

Hörnum (Sylt) Municipal Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield stands a red and white light house sending six flash signals, which are realized as red 4-point stars. The base is blue superimposed by a golden (= yellow) conch horn.
Meaning:
Yellow, red and blue are the colours of Northern Frisia. The lighthouse shows an image of the fire built in 1907. The conch horn is a canting element. The name of the municipality is derived from Lower German word "Hörn", which here means "corne"". The corner of Hörnum had been part of the municipality of Rantum. In Hörnum a quay for steamers was erected in 1901. A railway station followed in 1903. In WW1 and WW2 it was a signal station and naval air base. Hörnum became an independent municipality in 1948 and is nowadays a popular spa. Since 1972 a nature protection area was established at the southern spit hook.

Kampen Municipal Coat of Arms

[Kampen CoA] image by Jörg Majewski, 1 Apr 2006, modified by Tomislav Todorović, 30 Nov 2012

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a silver (= white) sea holly, a six-leafed beach thistle species.
Meaning:
The blue colour is symbolizing the maritime environment. The thistle is symbolizing the landscape consisting of dunes, heathers and meadows. Furthermore it stresses the connection between the locals and the place they live.
Sources: Reißmann 1997, p.199 and van Heijningen 1998 [available online here]. The article describes flags for 4 communities on Sylt, but no generic flag for the entire island. I also checked the websites of several North German flag stores; none of them offers a Sylt flag.

The flag of Kampen was approved on 16 October 1979. The coat of arms was approved on 31 January 1979. The arms were designed by Hans Eickert, the flag was designed by Hans Frieder Kühne, an artist from Barsbüttel, near Hamburg.

I have an image of flag of Sylt island, but the quality isn't particularly good. Also I am not sure about my source.
Dirk Schönberger, 10 Sep 1999

I doubt that this is a flag of Sylt. I have been there several times, and there were a lot of flags. But this one was never there as far as I remember. The island flag of
Sylt is in the East Frisian colours with a fish and a motto.
Ralf Stelter, 7 Mar 2001

Often a Kampen flag is used, where the thistle appears as a frost pattern/ice crystal. I spotted that flag in August 2006 in various places in Kampen in the gardens of private houses.

List auf Sylt Municipal Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per fess. Above in a silver (= white) field is a blowing blue sperm whale over blue waves. Below in a green field is a silver (= white) mariner's compass. The needle is pointing to the whale's head.
Meaning:
List is the northernmost municipality of Germany. List was first mentioned in 1292. But coins and bones found here give eveidence that there existed settlements long before. The village was bought in 1400 by Danish queen Margrete I and remained part of Denmark until 1864, never being a part of the duchy of Schleswig. Catching and trading of fish was the economic base of the locals from time immemorial. In the 17th to the 19th century they earned their living by whaling. The so called "whaling commanders" played an important role in the local society. The whale is symbolizing the historical whaling while the needle of the compass is symbolizing the fishing grounds in Svalbard. The green colour is symbolizing the dunes. The white colour is symbolizing the sea.

The flag was approved on 21 February 1979. The coat of arms was approved on 31 August 1948. The artist is Albert Aereboe from Kampen.

Wenningstedt-Braderup Municipal Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per bend sinister wavy. Below are silver (= white) and blue waves. Above in a red field is the golden (= yellow) prow of a Viking ship, shaped like a dragon's head.
Meaning:
Yellow, blue and red are the colours of Northern Frisia and Sylt Island as well; while blue, white and red are the colours of Schleswig-Holstein. The partition per bend wavy is symbolizing force of nature and the cruel sea. The locals earned their living merely by shipping and fishing until 1859. After a spa had been established, tourism became the main line of business. The ship is symbolizing the changeful past and the daringness of the locals.

Klaus-Michael Schneider, 17 Nov 2012

Wenningstedt is a neighbouring village of Kampen on the island of Sylt. The flag is described in van Heijningen 1998 [available online here]: on a yellow field the coat of arms, slightly shifted to the hoist. I forgot where I found the coat of arms.
Stefan Schwoon, 31 Mar 2001

Flag and coat of arms were approved on 11 May 1959. The artist is Wilhelm Horst Lippert from Brunsbüttel.
