From 1952-1957 versions of the state flag (not officially introduced otherwise, however) had been used as car flags for state authorities. The relevant regulation is: Kabinettsbeschluß betreffend Flaggenführung an den Dienstkraftwagen der Mitglieder der Landesregierung und ihrer allgemeinen Vertreter (Cabinet Decision regarding Flag Usage on Official Cars of the Members of the Federal State's Government and their Deputies) of 3rd June 1952, published in the Amtsblatt Schleswig-Holstein 1952, p. 238. In 1957 a new design for the car flags was introduced. Sources: Laitenberger and Bassier 2000, Schurdel 1995 and Mattern and Neubecker 1988.
