Meaning:
The county received on 23 November 2007 the official authorization for the use of proper symbols. Very striking in the shield of the coat of arms (in first and fourth field) is a salt basket (Salzkorb). The basket came from the old coat of arms of the village, later city of Groß-Salze (- 1926), now part of the city of Schönebeck. It symbolises the name of the county - Salzland (= Salt Country). The other parts of the shield of the coat of arms display the former State of Anhalt (third field) and the former Prussian Province of Saxonia (second field).
The new symbols were approved on 11 July 2007 by the County Council (Kreistag).

It was a red over green over white horizontal tricolour with centred arms ( see left image above).
The county councul adopted a different flag on 30 January 1991, which was approved by Minister of Interior of Saxony-Anhalt on 25 June 1992. The approval was however cancelled on 1 June 1995 and a more modern version with the usual Iberian shield (German: Halbrundschild) was required by the authority. The former flag was basically the same ( see left image above), but the arms were shifted to the hoist and the shield had an traditional shape as used since 1561.

Shield Argent, an embattled wall Gules in bend, masoned Sable, on the embattlements a bear passant Sable, tongued Gules and collared Argent.
Meaning:
The bear on a wall is identical to the arms of the Princes of Anhalt from the Bernburg branch. The dynasty was split into several branches in 1251. The arms were the main part of the arms of the Princes, the Principality and later the State of Anhalt. The present arms thus go back to the old arms of Anhalt.

There had been mentioned just colours of red and silver. The existence of a flag with arms is not completely certain.
