Flag adopted 24.11.1994, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted on November 24, 1994. The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged: the lion in the sinister half symbolises the lions of the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, the Counts of Orlamünde and the Lords of Gleichen, the wheel in the first quarter is the arms of the State of Mainz, and in the third quarter the apples are canting for the city of Apolda and were used by the governors of Apolda.Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
