Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Azure with base wavy Argent, issuant from base a demi-otter Or, holding an embowed fish Argent tongued Gules with his paws and mouth.
Meaning:
The origin of the settlement was a castle surrounded by two arms of Wümme River. The name had been Ottersberg already since about 1200. The castle had been destroyed several times, until it was rebuilt in 1285 by Archbishop Gisilbert of Bremen, who founded a market town (Flecken) on that place. It was relocated to the current position in 1677 and became seat of a subcounty (Amt) in 1719. Since then a sitting otter and fish appeared in local seals. The colours were chosen arbitrarily by Otto Hupp. In 1949 the current arms were granted by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony. The grassy base then was replaced by a base wavy. The otter is a canting element.
