Meaning:
Wittenberg developed around a castle, built in 1180 and gained city rights in 1293. It was one of the main cities at that time in Saxony and capital of the Duchy of Sachsen-Wittenberg. The arms are based on the oldest seals of the city, known since 1320. The castle is representing the city itself, the river is the Elbe River crossing the city. The two inescutcheons are the arms of Saxony (sinister) and the arms of the Archmarshall of the Holy Roman Empire (dexter). The Dukes of Saxony held this title (see also the arms of Wittenberg County).

The arms were approved on 5 December 1995.
