The German Soccer Association (Deutscher Fussball-Verband der DDR /DFV) of the former GDR became part of the International Football Association FIFA in 1952. In the same year the GDR national team played there first official match after a few inofficial ones. The DFV selection lost at Warsaw on Septembre 21st 1952 against the polish national team 0-3. The most important win in GDR soccer history came on the 22 June of 1974: During the world championship in West Germany, the DFV-Team won against the West German DFB-team - that nevertheless became world champion later - with 1-0. Jürgen Sparwasser (1.Football Club Magdeburg) became part of the soccer history with his goal.  The pass(ing) to the player Sparwasser came from Erich Hamann (1.Football Club Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder)) .

The win of the golden medal at  Games of the XXI Olympiad in Montréal 1976 is still unforgotten. The team of coach Georg Buschner (also coach of the FC Carl-Zeiss Jena) achieved a 3-1 against Poland in the final. Another success from club-view was the win of the cup winners' cup in 1974 when 1.FC Magdeburg celebrated a 2-0 win against the big AC Milan.

I find the wording on this flag intriguing - was it common for DDR organisations to refer to themselves as the "German organisation of the DDR"? It seems tautological.

The word "German" refers to the German nationality. The abbreviation "GDR" refers to the souverain state of a "German Democratic Republic". I remember a fact which the word "Germany" refers to the "Federal Republic of Germany".
