Introduction

The traditional rowing clubs, as they are called in RA04, had been denoted in RA77 as "rowing clubs, having formerly been located in Central- or Eastern Germany". Thereby it is understood that Central-Germany was the former DDR and Eastern Germany was the part, administrated after WW2 by Poland and the Soviet Union and later ceded to those countries.

In RA77 there had been fifteen clubs, in RA04 their remained only two clubs, those were Ruder-Club "Germania" Königsberg in Hamburg, which had been dissolved in 2006, as far as I know, and Ruderklub "Vineta" Potsdam e.V., which still exists and had more than 60 members in 2008.

All the traditional clubs were established by their members after WW2 living in West-German "exile" and always hoping to come back one day to their home towns.

There usually was a West-German club, I call it host, which was supporting a traditional club. If the host would be a person, you would call this person a godfather. The traditional clubs became members of German rowing association DRV and had their own members and their own boats, which were placed into boat houses of the hosts. Furthermore they got their proper domestic authority in their host’s boat houses. The information was provided by Werner Löffler, chairman of "Vineta" and Hans-Helmut Laser, the former chairman of "Germania" Königsberg.

When time was passing, those clubs ran out of members, which simply died. And therefore with one exception meanwhile all those clubs had been dissolved or merged perhaps with their hosts. The rowing clubs, having been located in former DDR meanwhile went back partially to their home towns, e.g. in Leipzig, Halle and Merseburg.

Some clubs had no official host or the name of host can’t be reconstructed today. I make a difference between established in and located in. The latter usually is the name of a West-German town. If the host is known, the name of the club is added.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 21 December 2008

Furthermore there had been several German rowing clubs, established in territories lost by Germany in WW1 and WW2, which did not survive and simply faded away. Finally there had been very few German rowing clubs abroad, which are not listed here.
