Description of the flags

The flags proposed for the island are red-green or red-white-green. The main colour of the Dannebrog (red) has been kept, and green has been added to represent the natural features of the island. White is sometimes used to separate the red and the green. The proportions are the same as for Dannebrog, 28:37 (12-4-12 : 12-421, in the red-green flag). The flag emerged sometime in the 1970's.

Use of the flag

I have seen a flag like this on TV coverage from some sports event. This could indicate that the flag is actually used.

I have never been to Bornholm myself, but this summer there was an article about Bornholm and tourism there in my local newspaper (Svenska Dagbladet). One of the pictures showed a couple of hand waver flags for sale, of which half was the Danish flag and half was the red flag with a green cross, which were said to be the flag of Bornholm. As Bornholm can be considered as a part of Skåneland (which consists of Bornholm in Denmark and Scania (Skåne), Halland and Blekinge in Sweden), the red flag with yellow cross can be used there too, I suppose.
Elias Granqvist, 2 January 2001

The flag is used on the island today, mainly the all red-green because the other one looks too much like the Norwegian one. I have once read that the flag actually might be the oldest in the world. Originally it is supposed to have been red with a green Thors hammer in the middle. Then later the hammer was changed to a green cross. I can't confirm if it's a true story or not.
Jens Voigt, 1 June 2006

This is a nice story, but it sounds too good to be true. Flags haven't really been around in that way that long.
Elias Granqvist, 1 June 2006

The red-green Bornholm flag is very widely used on Bornholm, as well as used as a courtesy flag by visiting yachts.
Nils Finn Munch-Petersen, 13 July 2007
