Overview

Cañar is a province in central Ecuador in Sierra Region. Capital is Azogues.
Željko Heimer, 15 July 1996

The flag, Coat of Arms, and legislation are at www.hcpcanar.gov.ec. The adoption date is 23 April 1954.
Falko Schmidt, 26 November 2003

The province was formed on  17 November 1880 with territories detached from the province of Azuay.
Legislation translated from www.hcpcanar.gov.ec:
"Provincial Decree of 24 April 1954.
Article 1. Coat of arms
- The coat of arms of the province of Cañar shall be in proportions 7:5 and divided by a chevron.
- In the upper dexter quarter, azure, is placed a moon argent, symbolizing the god star of the Cañaris, the aboriginals of the province; in the sinister quarter, azure, is placed a laurel branch tied to a wheat stem, to highlight the agricultural resources of the province and its glorious future. [The Cañaris were the Aborigines of the today's provinces of Azuay and Cañar, who were submitted by the Incas. The province of Cañar, originally named after the capital, Azogues, was renamed as a tribute to the Cañaris. I.S.]
- On the chevron, argent, are placed three stars or, all five-pointed, representing the cantons of Azogues, Biblián and Cañar, currently forming the province.
- In the lower quarter [the original text erroneously says "superior". I.S.], also azure, is placed a capulí*** tree, symbolizing the love of the inhabitants of the province for their birth land. [The capulí is Prunus serotina Ehrh. subsp. capuli (Cav.) McVaugh, a  subspecies of P. serotina (black cherry) native from Mexico and Guatemala, whose fruits were eaten by the Incas, who spread it all over their empire. I.S.]
- Crowning the shield a stylized torch, representing the aspiration to felicity and peace of the province and its daily struggle to make of science and art means of surpassing.
Article 2. Flag
The flag of the province shall be made of three equal horizontal stripes:
- The first, azure, symbolizing the highness of its ideals;
- The second, yellow, recalling the agricultural and mineral resources;
- The third, red, representing the inhabitants' heart full of enthusiasm and faith to the certitude of a glorious future.
Article 3.
The coat of arms shall be placed in the middle of the yellow stripe of the flag and shall be used in all official acts of the entities. The coat of arms shall also be used to seal the official correspondence of the Provincial Council, as well as all other documents when required."
Since the province has now seven cantons, the number of stars on the chevrons was increased to seven.
