Overview

Guayas is a province in central coastal area of Ecuador in Costa region. Capital is Guayaquil.
Željko Heimer, 15 July 1996

The well known flag of blue, white, blue, white, blue horizontal with three white stars in the central blue. This flag was used by the Revolutionary movement in 1820 ("Junta revolucionaria de Guayaquil", 9 October 1820).
Jaume Olle, 8 September 1996

Flag and Coat of Arms could be seen at www.explored.com.ec.
Jarig Bakker, 26 January 2001

Having been at Guayaquil, Guayas, Ecuador, I have seen two versions of the flag.  They have the same pattern: five bands of blue and white alternated, the blue is a light sky blue, and the bands are equal-sized. Three white five-pointed stars is the central blue band.  The stars are either with a point to the top as above or with no point to the top, bottom, left or right as in the Variant.
Carlos Thompson, 15 June 2003

The Province of Guayas was created on 31 July 1824 according to the Law on the Territorial Division passed by General Francisco de Paula Santander, which created the State of Quito, divided in the three Departments of Ecuador-Quito, Azuay and Guayaquil. Beforehand, the first meeting of the Electoral Congress and College of the Free Province of Guayaquil (including the today's provinces of Guayas, Los Ríos, El Oro, Manabí and Galápagos) took place on 8 November 1820.

There should be soon a new province in Ecuador, following the secession of the peninsula of Santa Elena (Cantons of Libertad, Salinas and Santa Elena  from the Province of Guayas to form the Province of Santa Elena.
Ivan Sache, 28 October 2007

Guayas is a coastal province in Ecuador. With a population of over 3-million people, it is the most populated province in Ecuador. It is the fourth largest province in the country in terms of area. The largest city of Ecuador, Guayaquil, is located within the province. The province is divided in 25 cantons.

Coat of Arms

image from www.explored.com.ec, located by Jarig Bakker, 26 January 2001

Interesting: the Guayas page at www.cpg.gov.ec (now defunct) shows two versions of the arms. On the main frame it has old w-b-w Ecuadorian flags supporting the shield, on the emblems frame it has starless Guayas flags.
Any reason or dates for that change known?
Ralf Stelter, 16 January 2001

image from Guayaquil municipal website

The two versions of the coat of arms mentioned by Ralf Stettler do not seem to be shown any longer on the provincial website. The coat of arms of the province is based on the colonial arms of the town of Guayaquil. shown and described on the Guayaquil municipal website. Captain Diego de Urbina designed the coat of arms in order to recall the arms of his birth town and to perpetuate his fame, after having rebuilt the town of Guayaquil in 1541. The colours of the provincial coat of arms differ from Urbina's coat of arms. The background of the shield is blue instead of white (?), the tower is white instead of black(?), and the lion is yellow instead of red. The three blue waves in the bottom of the shield might have inspired the flag of Guayaquil.
