Overview

The parish of Ayacucho (25,688 ha)o is located in the south of Manabí Province

Ayacucho was the place of a battle fought on 9 December 1824, which opposed the independentist army commanded by General Antonio José de Sucre (5,780 soldiers) to the Spanish Royal troops commanded by Vice Roy José de la Serna and General José Canterac (9,310 soldiers supported by 11 cannons).
Sucre motivated his troops by saying: "Soldiers, the freedom of South America depends on today's efforts. Another glorious day shall crown your admirable constancy".
After two hours of fierce fighting, Sucre won the last battle for the independence. "General Canternac, Commander in Chief of the Spanish Army, and General La Mar, came to me to surrender", according to a letter sent by Sucre on 11 December 1824 to the Minister of War of Colombia. Sucre further wrote to Bolívar: "This concludes the war and completes the freedom of Peru".
In the aftermath of the battle, the Congress gathered in Lima awarded the title of Marshal of Ayacucho to Sucre, which was confirmed on 17 December by Bolívar himself.

There is little doubt that the red star represents the battle of Ayacucho.
