The municipality of Salcedo (58,216 inhabitants in 2010; 48,400 ha) is located 20 km south of Latacunga.
Salcedo canton was established by a Presidential Decree issued on 19 September 1919, elevating the San Miguel de León parish to a new canton named for Manuel Salcedo, a famous Augustinian orator from Latacunga.

The symbols of Salcedo are prescribed by an ordinance issued on 30 December 1961 by the Municipal Council.

Article 1.
The canton flag shall be made of three colors arranged horizontally. In the upper part, green represents the canton's agriculture and cattle-breeding. In the second place, white represents the purity of the feelings of the inhabitants. And, finally, again, green.

Article 2.
The shield proper is rectangular in shape, rounded-off in base, divided in four quarters that form its main body.
In the central part, a castle with crenellated towers, recalling the status of bridgehead and Spanish foundation dated 1573. From the center start four narrow stripes that frame and separate the quarters. On top, the date of elevation of the canton, "19 DE SETIEMBRE 1919", in base, the year of the Spanish foundation, "1573". On the flanks, the historical symbol related to the legend of the "royal lineage" once living in the fertile valley limited by Panzaleo and Tiobamba, known for the toponyms Yarchil, Molleambato, Tigualo and Tiguajalo, represented by the indigenous faces.
The upper left quarter features on a golden background an open book over two hills that represent the valiant, self-abnegated, altruist and illustrious history of the inhabitants.
The upper dexter quarter features on a blue background a molle tree [Peruvian pepper, Schinus molle L.], representing the fertile plain originally known as Yarchil or Molleambato.
The lower left quarter features on a blue background three wheat garbs ("golden grain") representing the region's agricultural resources.
The lower right quarter features on a green background a white diagonal stripe meaning aspiration to travel to all directions of the national territorial, also recalling the canton's colors.
The shield is surmounted by a torch meaning permanent aspiration to progress of a community represented by its institutions.
The lambrequins surrounding the shield mean all kind of triumph for the members of the Salcedo community.
The name of the institution is inscribed on a scroll placed beneath the shield, as "CONCEJO MUNICIPAL DEL CANTON SALCEDO".
