Presentation of La Caixa

La Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, Savings and Pensions Bank of Barcelona) (commonly known as La Caixa; website) was the result of the merger on 27, July 1990 between the Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros de Cataluña y Baleares founded in 1904, and the Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Barcelona, founded in 1844. The "Caja de Pensiones" had already been known as "La Caixa" for quite some time.
In the mid 1970s it was common that besides the bank's name, a slogan was included, not to replace the brand, but to complement it. La Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros chose to add the slogan "la Caixa de Catalunya i Balears" to identify with the Balears and Catalan territories. So the slogan "La Caixa" was transformed into the brand eventually, commissioning the Landor Associates agency (website) agency for this purpose in the late 1970s, while Joan Miró was commissioned to draw the logo.

On 27 January 2011, the Board of Directors of La Caixa announced the reorganisation of the Group, by virtue of which La Caixa transfers its banking business to Criteria CaixaCorp, which becomes a banking group called CaixaBank, and Criteria CaixaCorp transfers part of its industrial participations to a new unquoted entity that depends on La Caixa.
On 30 June 2011, all the banking business of La Caixa, including consumer banking, private banking and asset management, was transferred to CaixaBank. All the branch offices now use CaixaBank name while keeping the logo of La Caixa.

Flag of La Caixa

The flag of La Caixa is white with the bank's logo in the center. It is permanently flying at Barcelona's headquarters (Avenida Diagonal) and Madrid's largest branch (Paseo de la Castellana with Miguel Angel Street).
The logo, including the blue five-pointed star which people relate as a person inserting a coin into a bag, was designed by Joan Miró in 1980. The logo is also seen in a tapestry designed by Miró (photo).
