Presidential standard, left, Niceto Alcalá-Zamora (1931-1936); right, Manuel Azaña (1936-1939) - Images by Luis Miguel Arias, 17 April 2002

The presidential standard is prescribed in a Naval Order issued on 5 May 1931 and published on 28 May 1931 in Gaceta de Madrid, No. 148, as "red with the national coat of arms, with the initials of the name and surname in gold letters on each side of the arms."
The standards of Niceto Alcalá-Zamora (1931-1936) and Manuel Azaña (1936-1939) are shown in the MAdrid Naval Museum, Room 15.

Erroneous report

Presidential standard, erroneous report - Image by Jaume Ollé, 22 March 1999

Calvo and Grávalos [g2c83] shows the Presidential car's flag as a "shield in red, ratio 1:1", with the coat of arms centered, in height about 3/10 of the hoist.
This alleged Presidential standard with no letters never existed; the coat of arms is also oversized for that kind of flag. The image in the chart attached to the Naval Order shows no letters, leaving the blank spaces for whatever they could be.

Presidential Guard

Color of the Presidential Guard - Image by Santiago Dotor, 22 March 1999

The color of the Preidential Guard is red with the centered coat of arms, about half the hoist in height. In each corner there is a 45 degrees tilted red cartouche bordered with a gold filet, from behind which some green olive leaves appear. The top hoist and bottom fly ones bear a cypher with the letters "PR" ("Presidente de la República"), the other two the date the Republic was proclaimed, "14" "ABRIL" "1931" in three lines. Gold fringes, grey coloured finial with olive leaves bordering an anagram with the letters "RE" ("Rep&ucuate;blica Española), and a streamer with the colors of the Republican flag.

The ministerial standard is prescribed in a Naval Order issued on 5 May 1931 and published on 28 May 1931 in Gaceta de Madrid, No. 148, as "square, with the coat of arms on the fly third of the flag."
