Presentation of Salobre

The municipality of Salobre (locally known as El Salobre; 501 inhabitants in 2018; 4,953 ha) is located 100 km south-west of Albacete and 20 km south-west of Alcaraz. The municipality is composed of the villages of Salobre and Reolid (173 inh.).

Salobre was named for a local toponym, El Salado (The Salty Place). Salobre was granted the status of villa by a Royal Order signed on 18 April 1849, separating from Alcaraz.
A Royal Order signed on 23 February 1788 established in Salobre a tin manufacture, as an outfit of the Riópar factories.

Salobre is the birth place of the lawyer and politician José Bono (b. 1950), President of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha from 1983 to 2004; Bono was then considered as one of the three barons of the PSOE, together with two other influential presidents of autonomous communities, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra (b. 1948; President of Extremadura from 1982 to 2007) and Manuel Chaves (b. 1945; President of Andalusia from 1990 to 2009).
In 2004, Bono applied for the Secretariat-General of the party and was defeated, by nine votes, by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Appointed Minister of Defense in the Zapatero government, he resigned two years later. Bono served as the President of the Congress of Deputies from 2008 to 2011.
