Presentation of Alcudia de Monteagud

The municipality of Alcudia de Monteagud (148 inhabitants in 2008; 1,550 ha; unofficial page) is located in the Sierra de los Filabres, 90 km north-west of Almería. The village is located at 1,000 m above sea level, on a height (in Arabic, alcudia) watching the valley of Tahal. Monteagud, added to differentiate the village from the several other places named Alcudia, refers to the mount known in the Moorish times as Montahur, which dominates the village.

The village seems to have been settled quite late, by Berber tribes; each lineage built a hamlet named after the lineage's name and protected its territory by a network of small towers. Forced to abjure Islam after the Christian reconquest, the Moriscos revolted and were eventuallty expelled from Spain. Like many other villages, Alcudia de Monteagud was deserted and resettled by Christian colonists: cattle-breeders from the Sierra de Segura (Jaén Province), farmers from Castile and Basque shepherds from the Viscounty of Soule (Kingdom of France), who were registered as from Navarre.

Symbols of Alcudia de Monteagud

The flag and arms of Alcudia de Monteagud, approved on 27 January 2004 by the Municipal Council, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 19 March 2004 by the Directorate General of Local Administration and published on 1 April 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 64, pp. 8,033-8,034 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Panel in proportions 2:3, quartered by a green saltire, the flanks of the hoist and fly red, the upper white with a green grapevine leaf, and the lower, white, too, with a purple lion rampant.
Coat of arms: Gules a Moorish scimitar [alfanje] and a sword or crossed per saltire. A chief argent with a lion rampant gules flanked by two mulberry leaves vert. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The weapons symbolize the fightings between the Muslim and Christian inhabitants of the place. The mulberry leaves recall that silk production was once significant in the village. The lion rampant recalls that the village once belonged to Enrique de Guzmán.
