The municipality of Bacares (273 inhabitants in 2013; 9,500 ha; municipal website) is located in the valley of river Almanzora, 100 km north of Almería.

Symbols of Bacares

The flag and arms of Bacares, adopted on 22 April 1999 by the Municipal Council, are prescribed by Decree No. 347, adopted on 4 July 2000 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 29 July 2000 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 87, pp. 12,267-12,268 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Red flag, in dimensions 150 cm in length on 100 cm in height, charged in the middle by the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Azure a mound marroon charged with a castle or port and windows azure, 2. Argent of Cross of the Order of St. James gules. Grafted in base sable a mulberry leaf vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed [open on the coat of arms in actual use].

The castle represents the defensive fortress. The Cross of the Order of St. James is a reference to Alfonso de Cárdenas, Master of the Order, who was granted the town by the Catholic Monarchs. Mulberry, a crop of deep Muslim tradition, was the base of a flourishing silk industry.

The file previously submitted by the municipality of Bacares for the adoption of the coat of arms was declared null and void by a Resolution adopted on 11 October 1996 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 5 November 1996 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 127, p. 14,246 (text).
