Presentation of Bayárcal

The municipality of Bayárcal (317 inhabitants in 2008; 3,700 ha; municipal website) is located 85 km north-west of Almería, on the border with the Granada Province. Located in the Sierra Nevada at an elevation of 1,258 m asl, Bayárcal is the highest municipality in the Province of Almería.

Bayárcal was in the Moorish time a strategic village controlling the access to the Ragua Pass, linking the Almería and Granada Provinces. Moorish remains have been incorporated into subsequent buildings, for instance a Nasrid arch forming the cemetery ossuary and arcades reused in a private house. The castle of Yniza was once the seat of a Marquisate.

Symbols of Bayárcal

The flag and arms of Bayárcal, approved on 20 June 2006 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 31 July 2006 to the Directorate General of Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 29 August 2006 by the Directorate General of Local Administration and published on 8 September 2006 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 175, p.43 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Panel in proportions 2:3, white with a green triangle placed along the hoist and reaching the middle of the hoist, with a blue crescent in the upper white triangle, a blue cross in the lower white triangle, and two white and blue stripes.
Coat of arms: Shield in Spanish shape. Azure two mounds surmounted dexter with a crescent and sinister with a cross all argent, grafted vert a castle argent masoned sable port and windows vert standing on fesses wavy argent and azure. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The crescent and the cross represent the Muslim and Christian civilizations, respectively, recalling the Morisco period. The landscape represents Mt. Chullo and Ragua Pass, as well as the slopes of the Sierra Nevada on which the municipality is located. The tower represents the Castle of Yniza, of Muslim origin, while the waves represent river Bayárcal.
