Presentation of Turrillas

The municipality of Turrillas (235 inhabitants in 2008; 3,940 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km north-east of Almería.

Turrillas, part in the Moorish times of the taha of Níjar, was reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1488. Inhabited by Moriscos but not a single "Old" Christian, the village was deserted after the expelling of the Moriscos from Spain in 1570 and subsequently resettled by colonists from Murcia. In the beginning of the 20th century, the population of the village peaked at 1,400 thanks to iron mining, an industry that was suppressed by the First World War. The Lucainena concession was so rich that the Basque shipping company Sota y Aznar set up the Compañía Minera de Sierra Alhamilla, which operated a private railway to the terminal of Agua Amarga.

Symbols of Turrillas

The flag and arms of Turrillas, approved on 15 April 2004 by the Municipal Council, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 12 May 2004 by the Directorate General of Local Administration and published on 16 June 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 117, p. 13,328 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular panel, in proportions 2:3. Tierced at hoist [1:2] yellow with a green oak. The fly green with a white saltire.
Coat of arms: Or, a mount vert charged with a mallet and a hammer [argent] crossed per saltire and surmounted with three oaks eradicated and fructed vert 1 and 2. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The oaks are a reference to the rare and characteristic presence of the tree in the area. The mount represents Mt. Calativí while the tools symbolize the Manuela mining center, where galenic silver is extracted.
