Flag of UCA - Image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 3 December 2009

UCA (website), established in 1979, is the public university of the Province of Cádiz.

The symbols of UCA are prescribed by an Order issued on 24 November 1982 by the Ministry of Education.
The flag (photo) is prescribed as "yellow, as a tribute to the Faculty of Medicine, which constituted the seed from which the new university was born and grew up. In the center is placed the coat of arms of the university".

The arms are described "Azure on wave azure and argent a tree argent leaved of the same, three visible roots or over the waves, and fructed or; with a column argent on each side of the tree wrapped with ribbons or inscribed the first 'Non Plus', the second "Ultra"; the shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish closed by a diadem."
"The tree is the oldest symbol of wisdom, with three roots meaning the richness and depth of the old Western culture, which is three-millennium old, dripped in waves azure and argent that evoke the sea and the connection of Cádiz' old culture with the sea. The four branches growing from the trunk, which can be assimilated to the university, represent the four faculties that constituted the nucleus of the new university; from these branches appeared the fruits of knowledge, which are obtained in the faculties.
The shield is completed by the pillars of Hercule with inscription, as an allegory to the district's capital that encompasses the university.
