Presentation of La Aldehuela

The municipality of La Aldehuela (199 inhabitants in 2010; 1,704 ha; municipal website) is located in the southwest of Ávila Province. The municipality is made of the villages of La Aldehuela (capital), Las Navas and El Rehoyo.

La Aldehuela is the birth place of Friar Fernando de Toledo (1527-1591), the son of Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the 3rd Duke of Alba, and of the daughter of a miller of La Aldehuela; the "Iron Duke" recognized his son only in 1546. The story was made popular by Lope de Vega in the comedy Más mal hay en La Aldegüela de lo que suena (There are worst things in La Aldehuela than it appears). Fernando served in the Spanish army in Germany and Italy. Back to Spain in 1558, he joined the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and was appointed Grand Prior of Castile by King Philip II. After having fought on battle fields all over Europe, Fernando was appointed Viceroy of Catalonia (1571-1580) and member of the State Council (1582-1591).
