Presentation of Crespos

The municipality of Crespos (571 inhabitants in 2010; 3,192 ha; unofficial website) is located in the central north of Ávila Province, 40 km of Ávila. The municipality is made of the villages of Crespos (capital), Chaherrero and Pascualgrande.

Crespos, resettled in the 11th-12th centuries, was mentioned in 1250 as belonging to the Bishop of Ávila.

Symbols of Crespos

The flag and arms of Crespos are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 15 May 1995 by the Provincial Executive and published on 30 May 1995 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 102 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, with proportions 2:3, purple. In the middle of the flag and on its two sides is placed the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Four churches argent 2 and 2, 2. Argent an elm vert over waves azure and argent ensigned with two frizzy hairs [crespos] sable per fess. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The four churches represent the St. John the Baptist church (Crespos), the Apostle St. James church (Chaherrero), the Immaculate Conception church (Pascualgrande) and the ruined (by the ants, according to the local legend) St. Ines tower. The tree must represent the Moraña tree, higher than the Crespos church tower and locally known as the Millenary Tree.
