Presentation of Santa María de los Caballeros

The municipality of Santa María de los Caballeros (98 inhabitants in 2010; 2,240 ha; municipal website) is located in the southwest of Ávila Province, 75 km of Ávila. The municipality is made of the villages of Santa María de los Caballeross (capital), Carrascalejo, Navarregadilla, Los Cuartos and El Collado.

Navarregadilla is the birth place of Pedro de la Gasca (1793-1567). A priest and lawyer, Pedro de La Gasca was commissioned by Charles V to restore peace in Peru. He first used diplomatic methods, with little success, and eventually defeated Gonzalo Pizarro in 1548 near Cusco; Gasca then reorganized the colonial administration in a more judicious way. Back to Spain in 1550, he was appointed Bishop of Palencia, and, subsequently, of Sigüenza, by Philip II.

Symbols of Santa María de los Caballeros

The flag and arms of Santa María de los Caballeros (municipal website) are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 22 April 1999 by the Municipal Council, signed on 26 April 1999 by the Mayor, and published on 7 May 1999 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 86, p. 4,813 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular with proportion 1:1. A blue panel, in the middle a white vase with lilies, a red orle with five yellow spurs, in the same design as on the coat of arms. A finial made of a vase with lilies.
Coat of arms: Azure (blue), a vase argent (white) with lilies of the same, a bordure gules (red) five spurs or, each representing one of the five settlements forming the municipality of Santa María de los Caballeros. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The arms are canting. The vase with lilies represents in Castile and, more generally, in Spain, the churches and cathedrals dedicated to St. Mary (Santa María). The spurs are rank attributes of a knight (caballero).
