Presentation of Tabarnia

Tabarnia is a new autonomous community proposed by Barcelona is not Catalonia / Plataforma por la Autonom’a de Barcelona (website), a citizens' organization that held its Constituent Assembly on 24 September 2012 in Barcelona.
The organization argues that Catalonia is made of two parts clearly differentiated on economical, linguistic, identity, population and social criteria. Rural Catalonia is presented as "mainly independentist, based on local economy, and obsessed by the Catalan identity and hostile to the Spanish language". What would be Tabarnia is presented as "a cosmopolitan Catalonia, proudly bilingual, urban, multicultural and intensely connected with the rest of Spain and Europe".
Tabarnia (Tarragona + Barcelona) is defined as "Barcelona, its metropolitan area, and the strip of land that connects if to Tarragona".

The "President-in-exile" of Tabarnia is the playwright and actor Albert Boadella (b. 1943), founder in 1962 of the Els Joglars company. Known for his political satires and parodies during the Francoist regime, Boadella subsequently criticized the Catalan nationalism, then led by Jordi Pujol (b. 1930; President of the Catalonian Government from 1980 to 2003), in the show Operació Ubú. Calls to boycott of his shows from nationalist circles forced him to "exile" to Madrid, therefore his title of "President-in-exile", which is also a straightforward reference to Carles Puigdemont (b. 1962), former President of the Catalonian Government (2016-2017), still exiled in Belgium.
Knowing Boadella's background, Tabarnia seems to have emerged as a provocative joke and a satire of Catalan nationalism, before gaining some popular adhesion.

This proposed autonomous community is also a satirical parody of the Catalan independence movement and a movement against the independence of Catalonia from Spain. They advocated and claimed that they would seek a referendum to create a new Spanish autonomous community that would decide to remain part of Spain in case of a hypothetical Catalan independence.
It would encompass the current Catalan comarques of Tarragona, Baix Camp, Baix Penedès, Alt Penedès, Garraf, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona, Vallès Oriental, Vallès Occidental and Maresme. Proponents believe the area somewhat corresponds to the historic County of Barcelona, although its extent is considerably different. This proposal derived from a proposal created in 2011.

Currently it is not known who is in charge of the so-called Tabarnia movement and who invented the original concept of Tabarnia. Jaumé Vives and Albert Boadella have self-proclaimed to be the spokesman and president of Tabarnia. Miquel Martínez presents itself as the representative of Platform for Tabarnia, but in the association registry of Catalonia only exists Associació Somos Tabarnia (website). At a Spain level two other platforms exist: Coordinadora por Tabarnia (website) and Asamblea Nacional de Tabarnia.

Official flag of Tabarnia

The official flag of Tabarnia (photo, photo, photo, photo), which was presented in January 2018, is derived from the flag of Barcelona, the Catalan 2nd and 3rd quarters being replaced by the wavy stripes from the flag of Tarragona. The coat of arms of Tabarnia is added in the center
[Dolça Catalunya, 9 January 2016]

The arms of Tabarnia feature St. Georges, Barcelona's patron saint, holding a Tabarnia shield and peacefully taming the independentist dragon. The Latin motto "Acta est fabula" (The play is over) invited in ancient Rome the spectators to leave the theater at the end of the show; here it is an invitation to the dragon to go home and to the "independentist theater" to stop.

The official flag of Tabarnia (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) was derived from the flag, without the coat of arms, which was originally used - and is still widely used - by the supporters of Tabarnia in street demonstrations.

Supporters of the RCD Espanyol football club redesigned the flag with the Tarragona quarters in blue and white (photo), probably as a reply to the blue and white Estelada, redesigned by independentist supporters.
