Presentation of Esparragalejo

The municipality of Esparragalejo (1,462 inhabitants in 2019; 1,680 ha; municipal website) is located 60 km east of Badajoz and 10 km west of Mérida.

Esparragalejo was already settled in the Bronze Age, as evidence by the remains of a fortified village found on Los Olivares, a hill located 500 m from the right bank of river Guadiana. In 194 BC, the Romans established there a permanent camp with freshwater supplied from a dam through an aquaduct. The camp was expected to protect the valley of Guadiana and the Silver Road heading to the Sierra de Gredos. There was probably also a post on the road connectng Olisipo (Lisboa) to Emerita (Mérida), whose remains can still be seen in Valdelacalzada, Puebla de la Calzada and La Garrovilla.
After the Christian reconquest of Mérida in 1230 by Alfonso IX, the region was shared between the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela and the Order of Saint John, which became the next year the sole owner of the town. As part of the Commandery of Mérida, Esparragalejo was re-settled in 1405 by Master Juan de Pacheco; Pedro López de Porres, Commander of Mérida, established La Dehesa de Esparragal, referrring to the abundance of wild asparagi (espárragos); due to its very limited population, the area was renamed with a diminutive form, Esparragalejo.
