Presentation of Santa Amalia

The municipality of Santa Amalia (4,059 inhabitants in 2018; 7,360 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km east of Badajoz and 2O km north-west of Don Benito.

Santa Amalia was established in 1827 by Ferdinand VII upon request of laborers from Don Benito, Medellín and Montánchez led by Antonio López. The new settlement was named for the king' third wife, Maria Amalia of Saxony (1724-1760).
The village was built from 1831 to 1842 by the master mason Fabían González. The strict grid plan included 257 houses in traditional style, lined on eight streets converging to a central square. The settlement also included a Town Hall, a jail, a school, wells, and a cemetery. The first 100 colonists were allocated a plot of 24 fanegas, the next ones only 12.
The beginning of Santa Amalia was difficult, since laborers from Don Benito and Medellín initially refued to share their plots with the new colonists.
