Presentation of Valverde de Llerena

The municipality of Valverde de Llerena (585 inhabitants in 2019; 4,120 ha) is located on the border with Andalusia (Province of Seville), 150 km south-east of Badajoz and 30 km east of Llerena.

Valverde de Llerena was once known as Valverde de Reina, Valverde de Azuaga or Valverdejo. The town was established by Rodrigo de Valverde, Commander of Vález for the Order of Saint James in 1240, who decided to increase a small hamlet.
Valverde was granted the status of villa in 1559 by Philip II, remaining a dependency of Llerena. Valverde was definitively separated from the Order of Saint James in 1586 when acquired by Mariana de Córdoba, Marchioness of Villanueva del Río, to be eventually incorporated into the Duchy of Alba.

Flag of Valverde de Llerena

The flag and arms of Valverde de Llerena, adopted on 4 December 1995 by the Municipal Council and validated on 16 February and 9 July 1996 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 17 July 1996 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 13 August 1996 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 94, pp. 4,302-4,303 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Yellow with a green triangle at hoist. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Tierced in mantle, 1. Gules an eagle sable beaked and armed or, 2. Argent a Cross of the Order of Saint James gules. Mantle vert a tower or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The mantle features the tower of the church of the Immaculate Conception, erected in the 16th century in Gothic-Mudéjar style.
The tower is similar to the towers of the parish church of La Granada in Llerena. Carmelo Solís and Tejada Vizuete state that the Valverde tower served as a moidel for the Llerena tower.
