The municipality of Villarta de los Montes (437 inhabitants in 2019; 12,330 ha), the easternmost municipality of Extremadura, is located on the border with Castilla-La Mancha (Province of Ciudad Real), 230 km east of Badajoz and 120 km north-west of Ciudad Real.

Flag of Villarta de los Montes

The flag and arms of Villarta de los Montes, adopted on 18 April 1994 and 30 January 1995 by the Municipal Council and validated on 8 November 1994 and 7 March 1995 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 4 April 1995 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 20 April 1995 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 46, pp. 1,449-1,450 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Horizontally divided in the middle, white over blue, with a red triangle placed along the hoist. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1. Gules two mounts or, 2. Argent a three-arched bridge gules over waves azur and argent surmounted by a tower gules, 3. Azure an Imperial crown or, 4. Argent five fesses checky gules and or each charged with a belt sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The first quarter of the coat of arms makes the arms canting, for montes, "mounts".
The second quarter features the Gothic-Mudéjar bridge of Villarta de los Montes. Located on the Segovia Transhumance Road, the bridge was the main point of entrance in Extremadura for the Castilian and Leonese sheep heading to winter pastures. The bridge was a main source of income for Villarta, which perceived a toll. Of 225 m in length and composed of 16 arches, the bridge was flooded after the building of the Cijara dam in 1956; it can be seen during drought periods.
The fourth quarter features the arms of the Sotomayor lineage.
