Presentation of Zarza Capilla

The municipality of Zarza Capilla (311 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 2,218 in 1960; 9,201 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with Castilla-La Mancha (Province of Ciudad Real), 200 km east of Badajoz and 50 km north-east of Castuera. The village is composed of the two villages of Zarza Capilla Vieja and Zarza Capilla Nueva.

Zarza Capilla was established, according to Ortiz de Thobar, in 1280 by the inhabitants of the hamlets of Parchel, Sierra, Toril and Torilejo, located near a beautiful fountain covered with brambles (zarzas). The first settlement would have been named Zarzosa. After the Christian reconquest, the village was incorporated to the State of Capilla, therefore its name of Zarza Capilla.
Zarza Capilla was granted the status of villa in 1816 by Ferdinand VII.

The flag and arms of Zarza Capilla, adopted on 16 October 1995 by the Municipal Council and validated on 16 February and 9 July 1996 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 17 July 1996 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 1 August 1996 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 89, pp. 4,074-4,075 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Vertically divided, 1:2 purple at fly with the municipal coat of arms in the center and yellow at hoist.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Azure a bramble vert fructed purpure, 2. Vert a fountain with a stone argent. Grafted in base, gules a rock painting or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The colors of the flag are those of the shield's bordure (yellow) and of the brambles (purple).
The upper quarters recall the origin of the village, a fountain covered with brambles (zarza).
The lower quarter represents the schematic rock paintings found in the Cerro Alonso cave.
The bordure features the arms of the Dukes of Béjar, recalling that Zarza Capilla belonged to the State of Capilla.
