Presentation of Carcedo de Burgos

The municipality of Carcedo de Burgos (329 inhabitants in 2009; 2,568 ha; municipal website) is located 10 km of Burgos. The municipality is made of the villages of Carcedo de Burgos (capital) and Modúbar de la Cuesta (45 inh.).

Carcedo de Burgos was founded in the late 9th century - early 10th century in a place rich in holly oaks (from Latin quercus, "an oak"). The building of the town and citadel of Burgos allowed the safe resettlement of the neighborhood, here the left bank of river Arlanza. Carcedo was also under the influence of the neighboring San Pedro de Cardeña monastery, a stronghold of the Castilian medieval faith. Rights on the holly oaks, the village's main resource, were a matter of several disputes between the abbey and the villagers.
Modúbar de la Cuesta, one of the four Modúbar (Modúbar de la Cuesta, Modúbar de la Emparedada, Modúbar de Zafalanes and Modúbar de San Cibrián), was mentioned for the first time in 972.

Symbols of Carcedo de Burgos

The flag of Carcedo de Burgos, adopted on 19 October 2000 by the Municipal Council, is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 8 February 2001 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 15 February 2001 by the President of the Government, and published on 28 February 2001 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 42, pp. 3,355-3,356 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1. Four-colored. The field yellow charged with three gyrons from the hoist to the opposite side, the upper gyron red, the middle gyron black and the lower gyron green. Separated by 1/10 [of the flag's hoist] and 2/10 in the base. In the middle is located the municipal coat of arms.

The Royal Academy of History recalled that the coat of arms featured on the proposed flag had been rejected by the Academy, and, therefore, refused to approve the proposed flag.
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 2003, 200, 2: 170.]

The coat of arms of Carcedo de Burgos is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 16 November 1995 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 9 January 1996 by the President of the Government, and published on 19 January 1996 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 14 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Gules a castle or masoned sable port and windows azure, 2. Argent a holly oak eradicated proper, grafted in base or a wool ewe's head proper. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History did not accept the use of the arms of Castile just because the place once belonged to the Kingdom of Castile, as hundreds of other places did. The oak makes the arms canting.
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 1997, 194, 2: 397].

Submunicipal entity of Modúbar de la Cuesta

Modúbar de la Cuesta (official page) was first mentioned in 972. The village increased in the Middle Ages by incorporating smaller, deserted settlements, such as Quintanilla Vela (mentioned from 939 to the 14th century, of which some ruins are still visible), Modúbar de Zafalanes (ruins known as Las Huertas) and Zafalanes.
Modúbar is a word of pre-Roman origin, meaning "a hillock". Modúbar is a name shared by four neighboring villages in Province of Burgos: Modúbar de la Cuesta, Modúbar de la Emparedada, Modúbar de San Cibrián and Modúbar de Zafalanes. Modúbar de la Cuesta and Modúbar de la Emparedada belonged to the alfoz (group of villages) of Burgos, while Modúbar de San Cibrián and Modúbar de Zafalanes belonged to the alfoz of Ausín.

The earthenware of Modúbar de la Cuesta, dated from the Age of Bronze (13rd-14th century BC), was excavated in Llano de las Peñas when establishing a windmill park. More than 80 structures designed to store food were found, probably set up by a semi-nomadic population that recurrently settled the place. The artefact collection is made of 18 complete pieces (plates and pots), exhibited in the Burgos Museum since September 2013 (description).

The flag and arms of Modúbar de la Cuesta are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 14 October 1999 by the Government of the Province of Burgos, signed on 17 November 1999 by the President, and published on 29 November 1999 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 230, p. 11,586 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular. Vertically tierced. 1st third, red; 2nd third, yellow; 3rd third, green. A white bend of 30 mm in height. In the heart of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. A castle of Castile in chief three eight-pointed stars or, 2. Argent an oak fructed or on a base vert. In base three fesses wavy azure. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.
