Presentation of Pampliega

The municipality of Pampliega (373 inhabitants in 2010; 2,440 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km of Burgos.

Pampliega originates in a Celtiberian settlement located on the Cerro de la Mota hill, mentioned by Ptolemy (2nd century BC) as Ambisna / Mansina. After the Roman conquest, the place was renamed Pompyica / Pampilica.
The Visigothic King Wamba retired in 680 in the Pampliega San Vicente monastery, where he died in 688; his remains were subsequently transferred to Toledo by King Alfonso X the Wise, who granted privileges to Pampliega, including a weekly market that would become the biggest in the region. Resettled from its ruins in the 10th century, Pampliega and its monastery became the capital of the valley of Arlanzón. On 2 January 1297, King Fernando IV transferred Pampliega to García Fernández de Villamayor and his wife Teresa, members of a powerful lineage that also ruled the neighboring villages of Villaldemiro and Villamayor de los Montes; after her husband's death, Teresa sold Pampliega to the town of Burgos, which did not change the privileges of the village, even increasing them.

Symbols of Pampliega

The flag of Pampliega is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 11 March 1999 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 29 March 1999 by the President of the Government, and published on 12 April 1999 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 67, p. 3,884 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular flag. Gules: horizontal, 5/10; or (yellow): horizontal, 5/10; azure: bend, 1/10; argent (white): bend sinister, 1/10. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Pampliega (municipal website) is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 12 March 1998 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 16 March 1998 by the President of the Government, and published on 3 April 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 64 (text).
The coat of arms, which was designed by Friar Valentín de la Cruz, Chronicler of Arms of Province of Burgos, is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Gules a spike a sword and a bunch of grapes all or per fess, 2. Gules a Doric column or the capital ensigned with three stars of the same per fess in chief, grafted in base azure a bridge argent charged with a tower or the two masoned sable. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History stated that "the proposed arms are bristled with flaws that make their approval impossible". There are too many charges; there is a disproportion between the size of the charges in the upper and lower fields, the bridge should be bigger. Moreover, charges totally incongruous are placed in the same quarter (Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 2000, 197, 1: 174).
The Academy subsequently rejected the proposed flag, which included the already rejected coat of arms (Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 2001, 198, 3:191).
