Presentation of Villasur de Herreros

The municipality of Villasur de Herreros (290 inhabitants in 2009; 8,780 ha; municipal website) is located in the center-east of the Province of Burgos, 30 km of Burgos.

Villasur de Herreros was mentioned for the first time in 964 as Villa Assur de Herreros, referring to the Assur family that had founded the village and would subsequently leave it because of a quarrel with the first Count of Castile, Fernán González (d. 970). In 1204, the village was made a royal domain by King Alfonso VIII, who later granted it to the Chapter of the Cathedral of Burgos. "Herreros" (smiths) recalls that the village's smiths, who used the very pure water of river Arlanzón, were famous for the perfection of their products; the best heather brooms in the region were also manufactured in the village. In the 19th century, a coal mine was exploited in Villasur de Herreros.

Symbols of Villasur de Herreros

The flag (photo) and arms of Villasur de Herreros are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 1 June 2006 by the Municipal Council, signed on 5 June 2006 by the Mayor, and published on 19 June 2006 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 117, p. 11,618 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular (proportions 1:1) and tricolor: a bend or from the first third of the upper part and of the right lateral part at the same position of the left lateral and lower part. The upper left blue and the lower part green. In the middle the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Vert a jug with three lilies all argent, 2a. Or an anvil charged with a hammer and ensigned with a pickaxe and a shovel all sable, 2b. Azure a three-arched bridge argent masoned sable ensigned with five stars or with six and eight points. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
The first field recalls the arms of the cathedral of Burgos, of which Villasur depended for seven centuries; the second field recalls the preferred works of the villagers, smiths and miners; the last field represents the natural environment and history of Villasur: river Arlanzón with its bridge and references to Ansúrez (eight-pointed star) and Matarrasay, Santa Marina, Úzquiza and Villorobe.

The coat of arms of Villasur de Herreros was formerly prescribed by a Decree adopted on 11 March 1999 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 29 March 1999 by the President of the Government, and published on 12 April 1999 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 67, pp. 3,884-3,885 (text).
The only difference between the previous (1999) and today's (2006) arms is the number of stars. The original arms have "three stars or in fess, six-pointed, eight-pointed and six-pointed", while the new arms have "five stars or in fess, six-pointed and eight-pointed". Otherwise, the wording of the two Decrees is strictly identical; the new Decree, however, includes the meaning of the arms, which was not provided in the first Decree.
