The municipality of Villayerno Morquillas (226 inhabitants in 2010; 917 ha; municipal website) is located in the center of the Province of Burgos, 10 km of Burgos.
Villayerno and Morquillas appeared in the 10th century, during the
resettlement of the surroundings of the town of Burgos, founded in
884; however, the first written sources on the two villages date back
only to the 12th century.
The etymology of Villayerno is disputed; oldest written forms, such as
Liviermo and Libierno, seem to indicate that the anthroponym "Libierno"
could have been associated with the name of the resettler Guimario.
Morquillas, originally located one km south of today's
Villayerno was named for stone heaps locally known as morcueros,
morcueras or morcos.

The flag and arms of Villayerno Morquillas, adopted on 14 March 2000 by the Municipal Council, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 8 June 2000 by the Burgos Provincial Government, signed on 15 June 2000 by the President of the Government, and published on 6 July 2000 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 130, p. 8,519 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1. The whole field red, divided in two parts by a golden bend of 2/10 [of the flag's height] in height. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Gules the arms of Castile surrounded by a sword inverted or and a crozier of the same, in chief three six-pointed, eight-pointed and six-pointed stars or, in base three spikes or. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown.
