Presentation of Cañamero

The municipality of Cañamero ((1,664 inhabitants in 2017; 15,140 ha; municipal website) is located 120 km east of Cáceres on the border with the Province of Badajoz.

Cañamero was already settled in the Neolithic, as evidenced by remains found in caves and shelters located on the banks of river Ruecas. The Romans exploited mines and fortified the Castle's Hill to protect their estates. Coins and tools from the Lower Empire were found in La Olivilla; the oldest urban settlement might date from that period, too, as evidenced by funerary steles kept in the Cáceres Museum.
The Moors, here the Nafza Berber tribe, erected the castle of Cañamero. According to the Toledo Annals, Sancho Fernández, brother of King of León Alfonso IX, recruited in 1220 in Toledo a troop to fight in Seville. He diverted his way and headed to Cañamero where he occupied a "deserted castle". After Sancho Fernández had been killed by a bear during a hunting party, the Moorish king of Badajoz reconquered the castle and beheaded all his defenders.
The area was resettled by Castilian from Talavera, Plasencia and Trujillo in the aftermath of the reconquest of Trujillo in 1232. Visited in 1432 by St. Vincent Ferrer, Cañamero was granted in 1538 the status of villa by Charles I, separating from Trujillo.
