Presentation of Pescueza

The municipality of Pescueza (148 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 736 in 1950; 5,200 ha; municipal website) is located 75 km north-west of A HREF="es-cc-cc.html">Cáceres and 20 km south-west of Coria.

Pescueza was first mentioned in 1479 in a document establishing the limits of the village, and, again, in 1497. The village was then mentioned in 1530 in a census performed by Tomás González, probably for the Diocese of Coria-Cáceres; at the time, Pescueza counted 320 inhabitants, 80 tax-payers included.
Pescueza belonged to the Marquisate of Coria, part of the Duchy of Alba.

Pescueza has been organizing since 2008 El Festivalino, "the world's smallest festival", which includes theater, a candy workshop with the village's elders, and 15 concerts. Attendance increased from 1,000 in 2008 to 10,000 in 2019.
Since 65% of the population is aged more than 60, the municipality has transformed Pescueza in a village for the elders, who still live in their house but are provided an array of dedicated services.

Flag of Pescueza

The flag and arms of Pescueza, adopted on 25 December 1995 and 24 September 1997 by the Municipal Council and validated on 16 July 1997 and 17 February 1998 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 25 March 1998 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 16 April 1998 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 42, pp. 2,816-2,817 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of three triangles, the one with the points at the hoist's angles and midfly, yellow, the upper, red, and the lower, green. [Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms in full colors].
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Gules a St. Mark's lion or, 2a. Checky azure and argent, 2b. Or a flag gules. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The lion recalls that St. Mark is the patron saint of Pescueza, celebrated every 25 April. The flag must represent the "Echadas de banderas" (Flag throwing) that closes the procession.
The second quarter features the arms of the Duchy of Alba.
