Presentation of Valdemorales

The municipality of Valdemorales (197 inhabitants in 2018 vs. 997 in 1940; 990 ha: municipal website) is located 50 km south-east of Cáceres.

Valdemorales was originally known as Valle de los Morales, the Mulberries' Valley. For centuries, the place was the site of posts located on the road connecting the Guadiana ford to Cáceres and the Tagus ford.
After the Christian reconquest, Valdemorales was granted to the Order of Saint-James by King Ferdinand II the Saint. The Mudéjars who stayed were forced to leave their citadels to settle new hamlets located close to the fields and pastures. The Castilijillo keeps ruins of two cisterns.
At the end of the 14th century, Valdemorales was part of the Provisorate of Mérida, together with Arroyomolinos, Montánchez and Valdefuentes.

Flag of Valdemorales

The flag (photo) and arms of Valdemorales, adopted on 8 October 1993 by the Municipal Council and validated on 17 May 1994 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 23 May 1994 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 9 June 1994 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 66, pp. 2,165-2,166 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 2:3. Composed of a green panel with a white triangle with points in the flag's upper angles and in the center of the flag's lower edge. Charged with the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Argent a St. Andrew's saltire gules cantonned by four fig leaves vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The saltire recalls the town's patron saint, St. Andrew. The parish church dedicated to the saint was erected in the 17th century in baroque style. The church's vault and arches fell down in 1977, to be totally replaced by a modern roof.
