Presentation of Valdeobispo

The municipality of Valdeobispo (664 inhabitants in 2018; 4,210 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km north of Cáceres and 20 km north-west of Plasencia.

Valdeobispo is named, according to the local tradition, after a bishop of Coria had overnighted in the village and asked the inn-keeper for the cost; the inn-keeper answered him de balde, obispo (it's free for you, bishop). Scholars rather believe that Valdeobispo was the Bishop's Valley; the bishop of Coria, on his way to the parishes under his jurisdiction located in Salamanca, had to head northwards via the valley of river Alagón and the village. The valley was indeed a main route between León and Andalusia, used by the Silver Road - Ferdinand the Catholic crossed Valdeobispo in 1506, on his way from Seville to Castile - and the El Cordel transhumance road.

Valdeobispo was most probably established during the Christian reconquest, between the 11th and the 13th centuries, in a buffer zone, disputed until the eventual reconquest of Galisteo by the King of León.
Incorporated to the domain of Galisteo, Valdeobispo was part of a sexmo that also included Aldehuela, Aceituna, Carcaboso, Guijo de Galisteo, Holguera, Montehermoso, Pozuelo, and Riolobos.

The flag and arms of Valdeobispo, adopted on 29 July 1992 by the Municipal Council and validated on 24 November 1992 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 1 December 1992 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 2 February 1993 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 1, pp. 5-6 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 2:3. Composed of five equal vertical stripes, the outer, blue, the median, white, and the central, red.
Coat of arms: Gules a crozier argent superimposed with a bishop's cap of the same in base two mounts argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The flag in use (photo) is charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.
The arms form a rebus of the place's name, lit. The Bishop's Valley.
