Presentation of Iniesta

The municipality of Iniesta (4,355 inhabitants in 2021; 23,230 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km south-east of Cuenca.

Iniesta was already settled in the Neolithic and in the Bronze Age. Dated to the 5th century BC, the Cerro Gil necropolis has yielded an big Iberian mosaic portraying Punic goddess Astarte and a wolf. The Punta del Barrionueva, dated to the 3rd-1st centuries BC, belonged to the town of Ikaleskan, which was renamed to Egelasta by the Romans.
In the Muslim period, the fortified town of Yanasta was famous for the production of rugs. Alfonso VIII conquered the town in 1186, the resettlement of the area was completed by Alfonso X the Wise, who granted to the town in 1251 a charter similar to that of Cuenca. The first feudal lord of Iniesta was Juan Manuel, who incorporated the town to the domain of Villena. In 1452, Juan Pacheco, 2nd Marquess of Villena swapped the town for Castrojeriz (Province of Burgos) with Ruy Díaz de Mendoza. In 1476, the Catholic Monarchs reincorporated Iniesta to the royal domain and ordered the destruction of the town walls and the suppression of the crenels of the castle; all the symbols of the Manuel dynasty were also destroyed.
